How to make a comfy bed

Here are the bedding items to make a bed so comfortable you won’t want to get out of it in the morning.

Mattress - Invest in a good mattress. The mattress is the foundation of the bed. However, if your mattress is too firm or not as comfortable as you would like, you can always try a mattress topper to adjust the firmness.

A mattress protector or mattress pad – The mattress protector will protect your mattress and/or mattress topper from spills, pest, and excess moisture. It also helps your mattress last longer.

A mattress topper– The mattress toppers are thicker and are an upgraded version of pads. Toppers can be made of cotton, foam, memory foam, down, gel memory foam, polyester cluster puffs or fiberfill, and latex rubber. It is another layer of mattress protection, especially if you have small children or grandchildren. It adds another layer of comfort and It makes the bed feel more luxurious. It also can be used to revitalize an old mattress. You might need a mattress pad on top of your mattress topper depending on the mattress topper you choose.

Sheets – Does thread count matter? The higher the thread count the smoother, denser, and more durable the sheets. Look for sheets with a thread count of at least 300. Also, buy sheets made with fabrics from pima, Supima, Egyptian cotton or a combed cotton like percale. I like Macy’s Charter Club Damask Sheets 550 Thread count 100% Supima Cotton and Charter Club Sleep Luxe 800 Thread count 100% Cotton. I find these sheets to be incredibly soft and comfortable.

Bed covering – there are several ways to cover your bed. You can use a light blanket. A comforter set. Or a duvet cover with a goose down comforter or insert. The goose down and goose down alternative will give you a plush cozy bed.

Pillows - There are several types of pillow stuffing – sometimes called filler. However, no single stuffing works for everyone; so, finding the right one for you is like in the book Goldilocks and the Three Bears– this one is too soft, this one is too hard, this one is just right. My suggestion – start with a medium firmness pillow then make adjustments, if needed.

A Throw – Add a throw at the end of the bed – The throw is used to add additional warmth when needed. I have found a throw I just love – it’s from Pottery Barn (Faux Fur Ruched Throws). I love it because it is the perfect weight and it’s so soft.
